Whose problem is it?

Many people who are feeling stuck in a job they dislike find it very difficult to break out of the rut because they see 'the problem' as lying outside of themselves.

Why are they unhappy at work? Because they hate their boss (or their boss hates them!); because they don't get on with their colleagues; because the work is boring; because nobody is recognising what they are really capable of.... Do any of those refrains sound familiar to you?

What happens for people who think like this is that they may well succeed in changing jobs sometimes, and yet they still end up feeling unhappy and frustrated because they have not looked at the part they play in the whole situation.

So what's to be done?

The secret of career change success is to turn the spotlight inwards and take a long hard look at yourself. Let's face it, there is not a lot you can do to change others, but you can take charge of your own life - if you choose to.

When looking at yourself, it can help if you break the process down into three stages - past, present and future.

Look at your past

Take some time to reflect on the work you have done up to now. How did you end up in these jobs? What made you choose them? What has been good about any of the work you have done - go on, there must have been some good bits! What have you learned about yourself from doing these jobs? And what expectations of work lie behind these choices? What did your parents lead you to expect of work?

Look at your present

What is going on for you in your current job? What has made it go stale for you? What could you do differently that might change the way your work day unfolds? What about looking at the skills that you are using - if you are feeling bored and underused you may be losing sight of what you are good at. Try asking friends and colleagues what they think your top three skills or qualities are. You may find that you are more skilled and more valued than you think.

Looking at what you have got to offer and what you can do to influence how each work day turns out can give you a great springboard for exploring new career ideas.

Look at your future

Take some time to look forward to what you would like to be doing. If there were no limitations on you, what career ideas would you pursue? What skills and interests would you like to be using in your work in the future? What do you think you were put here on this planet to contribute?

You might also find it useful to look backwards from the future. Try imagining you are retiring. What do you want to look back on with satisfaction in your working life. What would you be proud to have achieved? What do you want your colleagues to be saying about you?

If you want something, the clearer you are about what it is, the easier it will be to work towards it.

Don't blame others - do it yourself!

So stop assuming that everyone and everything else is the cause of your problems at work. At the end of the day, you are the person with final responsibility for the way your career unfolds. If you don't like it, then ask yourself - what am I going to do about it?

Want to Change Careers? Then Get Curious!


If you are trying to make a career change, then curiosity is a great approach to adopt. Curiosity without being critical of yourself allows you to work out how you lost your career direction and how you can find a new route forwards. If you don't plan your career change with a curious and enquiring approach, you run the risk of finding yourself going back down the same well worn tracks.

So what do you need to get curious about? Here are my top tips for using curiosity to help you make your career change a positive one.

Be curious about yourself

How well do you really know yourself? What are you good at? What interests and excites you? What values are really important to you? What is your personality and how does that influence the work you will feel comfortable doing? If you don't take the time to get to know yourself better, then how can you be sure that your new career ideas will be a better match than the last ones?

Be curious about your experience to date

What has gone before is a great place to start. What led you make the career choices you have made up to now? Why did you think they would work for you? What have you enjoyed on the job so far and what have you come to thoroughly dislike? What were the high and low points of the work you have done? What have you learned - not just work skills, but about yourself?

Be curious about the messages from your childhood

What were the messages you got about what kind of career you should pursue when you grow up? What was expected of you? Name these messages, pin them down and then decide if you still want to go along with them. You can choose whether what you think you should be doing is actually what you want to do. If not, then its time to make a change.

Be curious about other people's jobs

Once you have looked in at yourself, take a look outwards. Look around you at what other people do. Become a curious roving reporter. Ask them about their work. Find out what a typical day involves, what do they love about what they do - and what drives them nuts!. The more information you can gather about a wide range of possibilities, the more ideas you will generate for yourself.

Be curious about other ways of structuring a working life

If you are in a 9-5 job, it can be hard to think of other ways of working. But there are many ways of structuring a working life. What about part-time, shift work, freelance, consultancy, short-term contracts and portfolio careers? If you are considering a switch to a less well paid job, what alternative income streams could you set up? Break out of the 9-5 mindset and be open to new approaches.

Be curious about just what you would do if there were no obstacles

Allowing yourself to do this kind of open minded star gazing can really liberate your thinking. This is not necessarily about having a dream and then expecting to just go out and get it (though you never know, you just might!). Simply thinking outside the box can help you come up with some great new angles that would not cross your mind if you are not curious enough to take off the blinkers.

Yes, but...

Maybe you are thinking 'yes, but didn't curiosity kill the cat?' Maybe it did, but that just freed the cat up to move on to its next life. So what about freeing yourself up to move on to your next career? Life is too short just to have one! Getting curious is the first step on the road to a great new career future.

Life Getting You Down? A Career Change May Be In Order!


If you are feeling like you just can't get any more out of your job and it is making you unhappy with life, it could be that it is time for a career change. The need for a job change can be due to many things; poor management, boredom, lack of motivation -- heck even a midlife crisis can spur a desire for career change. At the same time, in order to maintain your livelihood there is a certain way of going about changing careers that you should stick to for best results. That certain way is this: take your time.

Slow it Down a Bit

If you think about it, you have worked at this job for as long as you have that another few weeks will not kill you. It may make you wish you could take a long nap sometimes, but it probably won't be much worse than that. At the same time, motivate yourself by using that time to make money while still planning and implementing changes for your life. Taking your time and not jumping the gun can help to ensure that you are in a better position once you actually change jobs.

Explore Your Options

If you want to be happy with your career change, it is your responsibility to make sure that you pick the right job this time around. Take some time to research and explore your options. Volunteer, get an internship, visit a site -- do whatever it takes to get as much a feel for the real world of the job that you are considering so that you won't regret your career change in a few months.

Be Realistic

When you are going through a career change, you have to remember that when you start out in a new industry, you are worth less than you probably were at the job you had become a seasoned professional in. You have to take a look at the market and see what the demands are like for the career that you are considering changing to. At the same time, it is your responsibility to make sure that you explore all of your options as far as education and see just what the implications would be as far as time and money are concerned.

If you are thinking about a career change, make sure that you are in it for the right reasons. A career change is not an effective way of fixing a problem that you may be having at work. As a matter of fact, that is a pretty good way to go about possibly messing up your life even more. If you can deal with the fact that you can't run away from your problems even with a career change, your life will be much better for it.

Changing Careers - Should You Follow Your Head Or Your Heart?


Are you struggling with your career change plans? Do you know you need a fresh start, but you just can't work out how to approach the whole business? Is there just too much to think about and you don't know where or how to begin?

Well, you are not alone. Many career changers get stuck because they are not sure what information is relevant and how to use it to make the right career change decisions.

Two approaches to career decision making

Fundamentally there are really just two broad approaches to career choice and career change decision making.

1. The logical, let's reason it all out approach - follow your head.

2. The intuitive, let's go with my instincts approach - follow your heart.

Much of the general advice on career change that you will find in books and on the internet falls into the first category. Advisers suggest that you should collect information about your skills, interests, experience and achievements and then match that against factual information you have collected about careers. Your new career then emerges from a review of what you have already done.

The alternative approach encourages you to think much more laterally. The idea is to break free from your employment and education history and allow yourself to think 'outside the box'. You are encouraged to reflect on your values, on what is important to you and what meaning you are seeking for your life in the longer term. The idea is that if you can truly engage with something that you feel deeply about, then you will find ways of making it happen.

Which one should I use?

You may have found that you automatically favoured one or the other of these two approaches. That is not surprising, because your inborn personality will lead you to prefer either a more logical style of decision making or a more intuitive one.

So my first suggestion is to go with what feels right to you. If you start by using a strategy that you feel comfortable with, you will be more likely to stick with it and make some useful progress.

However, if you only use your preferred approach, you are likely to overlook on a whole bunch of possibilities - a bit like only looking one way up the street and not the other.

Get a different perspective

To make a truly balanced decision about your career change, you need to use both strategies.

You may find using your less preferred approach hard work. Following your heart may seem a bit airy fairy if you are a rational type and collecting facts and figures may seem dull and pedantic if you are more intuitive.

So if you are struggling, enlist the help of a friend who you know operates differently from you. Ask them to help you think through the issues affecting your career change plans and they will help you make sure that you see things from every angle.

Variety is best. We all have at least some capacity to be both practical and intuitive and the best life decisions are made by tapping into both.

Head and Heart

So when planning a career change, use your head. Ask what am I good at, what experience have I had, what training will I need, how much will it cost, how long will it take, how can I get my CV or resume just right?

But also use your heart. Ask what would I love to do if there were no limitations, what kind of work inspires and excites me, what do I want to look back on with pride when I retire, when I am at my best what are the skills and strengths that I am using, what is the biggest, wildest dream I can imagine and how can I make that happen?

With the answers to both these sets of questions, the route to your new career will be a whole lot clearer.

Career Opportunities - Expand Your Horizon for Career Progress


We all want to expand our career options. The wider the variety of career opportunities the more likely you will be working in career that keeps you excited, you perform at your best, and in the morning you can't wait to get to work.

To expand your career opportunities, first, you start with a self assessment of your strengths and weaknesses. Based on the results you factor them into an overall career plan to grow and expand your career opportunities. Build a personal profile of you current job qualifications and work hard to identify skills you may be missing that may be holding you back.

To assist you in building your personal profile, ask yourself the following questions:

1. Are you prepared to conduct a job search or successfully compete for a career advancement or promotion?

2. Do you have the personal and professional skills and abilities to effectively change with the changes in the workplace?

3. Do you have essential transferable job skills that would allow for a smooth job transition?

4. Do you keep up to date in your career and industry? Do you know the changes occurring within your department and organization? Develop as broad a perspective as possible.

5. Do you work at raising your professional visibility? Do you serve on committees, volunteer for special projects and routinely recommend job related improvements? Do you write articles for the company newsletter or for a job related association?

6. Do you routinely take advantage of professional and personal networks to gather information, help others and keep abreast of career opportunities?

7. Do you keep an "atta boy or girl" file to assist you in updating your resume? Does your resume accurately represent your qualifications and possible value to your current employer or a prospective employer?

8. Do you have an ongoing positive attitude? A positive attitude can be learned and made a habit. Your value as team mate and employee with a positive attitude will increase, allow you to more easily overcome obstacles and reduce the stress in your life.

9. Do you have a plan to build your skills? With the many formal evening classes, courses on the internet or just plain self-study you can add skills that makes you more marketable in the competitive workplace.

Your supervisor or your organization are not responsible for your career advancement, rather you must become proactive in your career planning and career development. By taking ownership of your career, you'll be taking giant steps to assure that tomorrow you will be in the right career with the right employer.

Death of the Career Path


Back in the mid 1990's as an HR Manager, I noticed that the conventional career path was a dying concept. Lifetime employment was an artifact. Lateral moves became the new way to advance your career. And downsizings were a constant threat.

The 'security' of a straightforward career path was gone. That left many mid-career professionals wondering what to do with their career plans.

I recently read an article asking "Are Career Paths the Best for Professional Advancement?" The article concluded career paths are no longer relevant. I'm not surprised. They were on their last leg years ago.

Yes, it's true. Linear career paths are dead.

So, what has replaced the good old fashioned career path?

Career portfolios.

I recommend managing your career as a portfolio. Based on your strengths, interests, and level of risk tolerance you make career moves that appeal to you and fit your goals. You choose opportunities that stretch and expand your skills instead of focusing only on grabbing the next title on the rung. You find security in being in control of each move, rather than feeling at the mercy of your boss, your company or the economy to decide your fate.

So, how do you build a career portfolio?

You diversify. The more options you have, the less you will be dependent on the company or the economy for your security.

Know your "most profitable skills". You recession proof your career by knowing exactly what your strongest competencies are and you strengthen them so that you're among the best at what you do. And the more transferable you can make your skills, the better.

Stay current on the trends in the economy and your field or industry. Look ahead a few years and make sure you're moving toward opportunities that align with the trends (instead of leaving you on the chopping block).

Let me give you an example from my own life.

In the mid 90's I was a happily employed HR Manager at a fairly large corporation. But, the writing was on the wall that much of HR was going to be outsourced, industry wide, in the next 5 to 10 years. I noticed a great deal of focus on becoming more strategic, and on being able to support company-wide change efforts (which makes sense given all the organizational changes we've seen since the late 90's). I decided it was time to diversify in order to avoid a dead end career track.

In order to diversify my career I made a few specific and planned moves.

I went back to grad school to earn my Masters Degree. I minored in Organization Development, to diversify my knowledge base beyond the scope of traditional HR functions. I also had an interest in teaching, so I took electives in adult learning. When I graduated, I took a job in Consulting where I could get experience leading organizational change and experience a variety of industries. From there, I expanded my experience base by taking on a part time college teaching position.

All of these moves were designed to expand my career portfolio so that I had options, no matter what happened. I could be an HR Manager, I could consult, I could teach. I knew traditional HR functions and I knew how to implement broad scale change. All of these moves made me unique and more valuable in the marketplace.

List Of Different Careers


This article contains descriptions and list of different types of careers.

Unless one grew up in a very wealthy family, usually a human being has to earn a living at some point of his or her life. We can safely say that a very significant amount of our life time is spent on a job.

Knowing is, how can we make our career or work more fulfilling and enjoyable? An essential aspect for consideration is to find a job that is compatible and harmonious with our personal skills and interest.

For example, if you enjoy and are skilled in music, you may want to find a job that pays you to do just that. You may want to thrive towards being a musician because this job takes full advantage of your passion and musical talent.

Below is a generic list of the various genres and types of careers. These careers are listed according to the nature of work. We should be able to fit into at least one category. That means at least one categories will align with our personal interest and talent better.

1. Artistic careers.

2. Medical careers.

3. Cooking and culinary careers.

4. Sales careers

5. Banking and finance careers.

6. Business and accounting careers

7. Legal and law-related careers.

8. Sports careers

9. Technical and engineering careers.

10. Musical career.

OK, these are the main sections. There may be a few minor sections being missed out. But in a nutshell, most jobs will fit into at least one of the category.
